via  The 36th Avenue

What You’ll Need

  1. Mugs
  2. DecoArt CeramicsPaint (Gloss Enamels for Ceramics)
  3. Flat Brush
  4. Vinyl Stencils

Tutorial

  • Clean all mugs to be stenciled and let dry completely (follow directions on CeramicsPaint label)
  • Make sure the shape of your lettering is flat (the stencil will wrinkle a bit due to the shape of the mug)
  • Add tape around the edge
  • Paint the stencil by using taps, not side to side or up and down motions (once coat should do)
  • Remove the stencil as soon as you’re done painting
  • In case of the paint bleeding through, use a pin to clean up the design
  • Let air dry for an hour and put mugs in the oven for 30 minutes at  350º
Et voilà!

Christmas Candles – DIY

A cranberry tinted soy wax candle inside a plain glass oval container, painted and embellished with a glittery seasonal message.  Perfection, via CentsationalGirl.

Supplies

stick chipboard to glassStep One

Attach chip board letters with just enough glue from a glue stick to keep them in place.  You could also use stickers or Cricut letters here.

Cover the top of glass with painter’s tape (or simply turn it upside down) and spray with two coats of frosted glass spray paint.  Allow to dry for 30 minutes in between coats.

Note: Most ordinary colored spray paint’s are not designed for glass, but frosted glass spray paint is, therefore it acts as a good primer for any subsequent colored spray paint you choose.

Step Two

Once your two coats of frosted glass paint are dry, spray paint your color coat of choice (seen here is Rustoleum’s Heirloom White).  After you’ve sprayed your glass with your colored spray paint, sprinkle glitter into the paint while the paint is still wet.

Step Three

Remove chipboard letters.

Melt your microwavable soy wax in the microwave and add any colored tint you choose.

If you want to have a white wax but colored letters underneath, then use colored paint designed for glass to paint the inside of the glass before you add your white wax.

Remove your letters and scrape away any residue from the glue stick or paint with a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool.

** I recommend doing the wax last, after you paint.

 Step Four

Melt your microwavable soy wax in a microwave safe glass container (like a Pyrex measuring cup) about 2 to 3 cups at a time.  Add tint, then pour into heat safe glass container with a wick.  Use a chopstick or similar tool to support your wick as your candle cools.

Once your wax is cooled and your paint and glitter have dried, your candle will look like this.  Lovely.

Chalkboard Fridge

Posted on

So I haven’t actually watched the movie Because I Said So… but finding clips of the decor featured in the movie made me very happy, especially when I came upon the chalkboard fridge!  Brilliant and so very useful!

What you’ll need:

  • Coarse sand paper
  • Masking tape
  • Small can of primer
  • A bucket of chalkboard paint
  • A high quality paint roller (as to not create air bubbles)

Don’t feel that you have to use green or black for this project, there are a variety of chalkboard paints available at your local hardware store and craft stores.

To avoid the handles, you can either remove them or cover them with painter’s tape.  Make sure to choose a tape that is good at preventing the paint from bleeding through though!

Directions:

  1. Remove the handlebars on your fridge and set aside (or cover with painter’s tape).
  2. Use coarse sand paper to roughen the front of the fridge. Doing so will make the initial coat of primer adhere more easily to the surface. Sand the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes, until the surface feels rough and piles of powder have built up on the floor beneath the fridge.
  3. Vacuum the powder and prepare the area for painting.  Line the floor in the vicinity of the fridge with several layers of newspaper.
  4. Line the edges of the fridge with masking tape, so that only the front face will get painted (or you can do the whole fridge).
  5. Determine whether the “grain” or “nap” of your fridge, if there is one, runs horizontally or vertically.
  6. Evenly apply the initial coat of primer with your roller, and let set overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours.
  7. Wash out your roller and reserve for the next steps. (In approximately 2 hours the paint will have set, and you can very carefully open the doors if you need to retrieve food from the fridge.)
  8. After the primer has completely dried, apply the first coat of chalkboard paint in the correct “grain” for your fridge. Apply the coat evenly with your roller, taking care that there are no thick or thin areas of paint that will dry unevenly. Wait 4 hours.
  9. Apply the second coat in the same manner, and wait 4 hours.
  10. Apply the third and last coat. You’re almost done! Now you just need to wait 2-3 days, allowing the coats of paint to really harden on the surface.
  11. After a few days, it’s time to “season” your fridge, like you would with a cast iron skillet. Using a piece of chalk, run the length of the chalk back and forth on the fridge, until the entire surface of the fridge is covered. Then erase all of it, and your chalkboard fridge is ready to be used!
  12. After a few days, you may wipe down the chalkboard with a damp towel for a cleaner surface.
